COVID-19 vaccine hope: 37 million syringes ordered by Ottawa

OTTAWA - To be ready for a possible effective vaccine against COVID-19, the Trudeau government has signed a contract for the delivery of 37 million syringes.

Public Service and Procurement Minister Anita Anand said this Tuesday at a press briefing in Ottawa.
The syringes were ordered from Becton Dickinson with the goal of having a vaccine licensed in the country.
It is a new contract and the delivery schedule is still being worked out, she added.
For her part, Canada's Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, noted that there will be no obligation for Canadians to get vaccinated, but all Canadians will be taken into account. when planning vaccine production.
In addition, Minister Anita Anand said that millions of personal protective equipment (PPE) are received each week across the country for the battle against the spread of COVID, particularly in the event of a second wave of coronavirus.
"Canada is not out of the woods yet," she said.
The priority, according to the Minister of Supply, remains the acquisition of gowns and masks. In recent days, some 40 million pairs of gloves have been received across the country, as have 3 million gowns, 100 million surgical masks and 3 million face masks.
Minister Anand has acknowledged, however, that only 200 of the 40,000 fans ordered have been received so far. Others, ordered from Canadian companies, will arrive in the coming weeks and months, she said.
In addition, a first ship carrying hand sanitizers is soon to dock in Vancouver and four other ships are on the way.
